About the Emergency Medical Services Program…

National EMS Program

The USDA Forest Service has a responsibility to our employees to ensure they receive prompt and professional emergency medical care in the event of an emergency. This is especially true given the nature of the Forest Service work, where injuries and illnesses can happen far from hospitals, ambulance access, and other emergency services.

The EMS Program is comprehensive and allows for agency credentialed EMS providers to render emergency medical care. The program is authorized per policy and regulations, and provides medical direction, protocols and procedures, and credentialing.

The EMS program is supported by the National EMS Program office in Washington DC, the Regions and Units (i.e., National Forests), the Regional and Unit EMS Coordinators, and a network of Local Emergency Medicine Advisors (LEMAs, i.e., agency physicians).
